“Failover” Is Doing It Wrong

Failover keeps a backup idle until disaster and disrupts every session when it switches. Bonding uses every link at once, so a link dropping mid-session is invisible.

If your disaster-recovery plan includes the word failover, you are doing it wrong. That sounds provocative, so let me be precise about why.

Failover vs bonding

Basic multi-WAN does failover. It has a primary link and a backup, and it switches to the backup when the primary dies. That is better than a single link, but it wastes capacity — the backup sits idle until disaster — and the switch itself is a disruptive event for anything mid-session. Your call drops. Your payment times out. Your upload restarts.

True SD-WAN does aggregation and bonding. It uses all connections at the same time. The links combine their capacity, and a single session — a video call, a file transfer, a VoIP call — can ride across multiple physical connections simultaneously. If one drops mid-session, the session simply continues on the others.

That is the whole difference: failover reacts after something breaks; bonding never lets the break reach the user.

Why the distinction matters

Most of the market glosses over this, and it is exactly where the connectivity layer earns its keep. “We have a backup circuit” is a failover mindset — it assumes an outage will happen and hopes the cut-over is quick. “We bond diverse links” is a different posture entirely: no single failure, and few double failures, can take the site offline, because every link is already carrying live traffic and the loss of one is absorbed by the rest.

So retire the word. You do not want a faster failover. You want to never fail over at all.
