Underlay vs. overlay, in one minute
The underlay is the physical transport: fiber, cable, 5G, satellite. The overlay is the software network built across it: tunnels, policies, segmentation. Every SD-WAN vendor sells an overlay; they differ in which underlays they take seriously and what else they bundle. Peplink’s bet is underlay diversity — treat cellular and satellite as first-class transports and bond them at packet level — while most of the market treats them as backup.

Where the others genuinely win
Fair is fair: if your requirement is a single vendor delivering ZTNA, SWG, CASB, and WAN as one SASE contract, the security-suite players do that and Peplink doesn’t pretend to. If you’re running a 800-branch bank with a dedicated network team and a Cisco EA, Viptela-class tooling earns its complexity.
