What is SpeedFusion? Bonding vs Failover

SpeedFusion is Peplink's bonding VPN — it combines many connections into one resilient pipe so a single link failing is invisible. Here's how it differs from failover.

SpeedFusion is Peplink’s bonding engine — and the most important thing to understand is what it is not.

SpeedFusion is not failover

Failover keeps one link “primary” and switches to a backup after the primary drops — so every switch is a visible hiccup: a dropped call, a reconnecting session, a frozen video. SpeedFusion bonds multiple links into one virtual connection where every link carries part of every session at the same time. If a link degrades or dies, the others are already carrying the traffic — nothing switches, nothing drops.

The one-liner

Failover asks “which link should I use?” SpeedFusion answers “all of them, at once.” That’s the difference between an outage you notice and one you never do.

The SpeedFusion technologies

SpeedFusion isn’t one setting — it’s a toolkit you enable per tunnel to match the links and the traffic:

Dynamic Weighted Bonding (DWB)

Combines multiple WANs into one fat pipe, weighted by each link’s real capacity and latency so a fast fiber and a slower 5G link cooperate instead of fighting. This is how you add up bandwidth across dissimilar links.

Hot Failover

For links you’d rather hold in reserve: a standby path that’s already up and inside the tunnel, so if the active link fails the cut-over is instant and seamless — not the seconds-long reconnect of traditional failover.

WAN Smoothing

Duplicates packets across multiple links so loss or jitter on any one link is invisible. The gold standard for real-time traffic — VoIP, live video, telemedicine, remote control — in exchange for extra bandwidth.

Forward Error Correction (FEC)

Reconstructs lost packets without waiting for a retransmit, repairing a lossy link (like cellular at the edge of coverage) with far less overhead than full WAN Smoothing.

SpeedFusion Boost — NEW

Built-in optimization inside the tunnel that sustains high throughput across lossy, high-latency links — purpose-built for LEO satellite (Starlink) and bonded cellular, stopping slower links from dragging the faster ones down. In field testing a bonded deployment reached 1.46 Gbps over SpeedFusion Boost with bonded Starlink. Supported on all models.
